Be a Galactic Hero

Hi, my name is Dustin. I’m an advocate, a cook, and I am part of the developmental disability community.

With the support of Housing Choices, I was able to transition into independent living. Before that, I lived with my parents. As I got older, I needed more independence and grow up with dignity and be my own person , but rent in the Bay Area is so expensive that living on my own felt out of reach.

Everything changed when I connected with Housing Choices. They helped me search for affordable housing and apply to their  properties with set-aside units for people with developmental disabilities. With their support, I was able to move into a one-bedroom apartment in San Jose. Today, I live independently, and it has changed my life.

I am now able to cook, clean, and take pride in my own space. I attend community events, build connections, and take on responsibilities that give me confidence and purpose. I feel happy, independent, and part of my community.

My giving ask is “Be a Galactic Hero,” and to me, that means showing up for others in ways that truly change lives. Your donation helps make stories like mine possible. It supports individuals with developmental disabilities in accessing affordable housing and the services they need to thrive.

Contributions go toward emergency rent, housing application fees, accessible transportation, and essential household items for people moving into a home for the first time. Many individuals are transitioning out of homelessness or unstable living situations. With your support, they can have a safe, stable place to call home.
