DESCRIPTION

Luna Vista is a 71 unit affordable housing project located at 950 W El Camino Real, is an innovative affordable housing community in Mountain View comprising 71 units. This project is dedicated to providing independent living options for both single and two-person households, with income levels ranging from 50% to 70% of the area median income. Notably, Luna Vista allocates fifteen units exclusively for adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities, demonstrating a commitment to inclusivity. Luna Vista was developed by Alta Housing and completed in November 2021. Alta Housing is a community-based non-profit that develops and manages affordable housing in Silicon Valley.

The architectural design of Luna Vista focuses on transparency and engagement with the surrounding environment. The naturally ventilated lobby, spanning the building's width along El Camino Real, offers a welcoming and secure entrance. Furthermore, resident lounges on each floor provide serene spaces for relaxation, each thoughtfully connected to the vibrant main entry area through a striking recessed transparent element featuring colorful glass panels.

Luna Vista boasts a unique vertical tower element that extends to a rooftop deck, transitioning into a covered common area for residents. On the building's eastern side, a distinctive mass with metal siding and undulating sunshades provides shade and architectural interest on the first floor. Meanwhile, the curved section near the entrance frames screened common decks on each residential level, promoting community interaction and a sense of belonging.

Architectural considerations also include setbacks and variations to create an aesthetically pleasing skyline. The fifth floor steps back on the El Camino Real frontage, reducing the building's perceived height. Both the East and West facades incorporate upper-level setbacks, and there's a generous setback from neighboring residential properties to the North. The roof-line features alternating railings and solid parapets, adding visual diversity to the overall structure.

In addition to its striking design, Luna Vista embraces sustainability with enthusiasm. It has achieved LEED Platinum certification, reflecting a commitment to environmentally responsible living. Photovoltaic panels are extensively used to offset energy consumption, while energy-efficient appliances further contribute to reduced energy use. Recycled materials with low VOC content have been thoughtfully incorporated into the building's construction, and drought-tolerant landscaping enhances the overall eco-friendliness of the community. Luna Vista is also equipped with a comprehensive on-site stormwater treatment system, completing its holistic approach to green living.
